Paypal conversion rate applied by default

Hi Everyone,

how are you?

This is my first time on the forum.

I am in Australia and this morning I paid $99USD for a future telehealth appointment.

When it came to pay the only option was to click pay.

The transaction went through but the website displayed "there has been a critical error on this website"

I also noticed that the $99 converted in Australia dollars came to $153 AUD therefore I did a conversion rate from my Australian bank which showed $141.

This is $12 more.

I contacted PayPal support that told me that I was charged using PayPal conversion rate instead of using my bank conversion rate.

Support told me that you can select a different conversion rate,  but I there were no options to select a different conversion rate.

I am very disappointed by how how much more money  Paypal charges clients.

Where are these options before payments? PayPal is not making things clear to follow.

Best regards

Alfred

Hello @alfred1956

Congratulations for your first post in the PayPal Community and welcome!

I understand your concern about the currency conversion charges applied to your recent purchase. I know this can be very upsetting! When you make payments in foreign currency, PayPal ill calculate the conversion rates for the purchase. You will be able to see the conversion rate while making the payment.

For card payments, you can choose PayPal conversion rate or card providers rate at the time of the check out. As what you've described, you were not given options to choose the conversion rate which means your card can only use either card conversion rate or PayPal conversion rate.

Apologies for the inconvenience,

Bindu
