Payment sent to an email without a Paypal account

I have a student in a class I'm an assistant for that sent our teacher his payment through PayPal instead of an e-transfer, she doesn't have a Paypal account and doesn't want to open one (not really internet savvy) so I asked him to cancel the payment and just do the e-transfer. He says the payment is showing him that it's completed. So where is the money since she doesn't have a Paypal account, did it actually work as an e-transfer? How would Paypal know her banking details without an account?

The payment is showing completed in your teacher’s PayPal account but it is not reflected in the balance?

Customers can use the PayPal guest checkout credit/debit card option right on the PayPal login page in the process of checking out with PayPal. The buyer fills out their billing and shipping address and card info on the PayPal checkout form.

If your teacher sees the transaction in their PayPal Activity page, click the transaction, then click “Refund this payment” link.

No my teacher doesn't have a Paypal account, she got the email saying to receive payment create an account and she doesn't want to open an account. The student says it shows in his account the the transaction is completed.

The teacher never had a PayPal account before under the email address that student send the money to? The student payment should have a pending status with cancel option. If not, the money will be automatically refunded to students account after 30 days unclaimed. Student can contact PayPal customer service to double check this, procedures change.
