My would-be customer left off the first letter of my email when he copy-and-pasted. I had messaged him saying I did not see the payment after 20 minutes. I asked if he manually typed it (as people misspell my last name often).
When he sent the 'receipt' I told him you left off the first letter. Now he thinks that since they will hold the payment for a month he will back out. That's after he got a message back from PayPal. He did not phone.
I told him to phone PayPal as it is obvious what happened. No one has (or probably can) accept the payment. Is there a charge for him to cancel it?

You need to contact your buyer(s) and ask them to see what it says in their paypal accounts either:
1. Pending / Unclaimed with a cancel option.
2. Pending / Unclaimed.
3 Completed.
If its:
Pending / Unclaimed with a cancel option.
Ask them to cancel the payment but tell them that it will take a few days to go back to their funding source. Then get them to use the "send money" > Goods/Services option and pay to your correct email address. They may not want to do this and so you could then cancel the transaction. OR you can send them a money request.
Pending / Unclaimed.
If there is no cancel option then the buyer will get their money back automatically 30 days after paying.
Again they may not want to pay you again until they get their money back so you may need to cancel the transaction for them.
Completed.
If its completed then come back for more advice.

I ended up phoning PayPal after the guy messaged me again (still really wanted the record). I had gone to town to mail another package (and do something else) and saw it when I got back.
He had a stroke not long ago and has weird vision now in each eye. All he can do IS copy-and-paste on things like that. The PayPal rep was VERY nice and patient. We tried something, but that cancel request he had done was already in effect. Mainly he is not thrilled at having to wait 30 days to get THAT back. I told him I will hold the item for at least two weeks (and may still have it after a month).
I did not hear back to THAT reply, but he was appreciative I was going to call PayPal. Got disconnected the first time and I kept making sure the rep was there the next time instead of continuing to explain. Also got a response after I had sent a written inquiry to PayPal. Even if the customer had phoned PP sounds like the outcome would have been the same.
I have had various folks misspell my last name (part of the email) and try to nip it in the bud before they pay. Even my mother-in-law spelled it wrong till last year...that's a LONG time. Years ago I had an eBay customer SWEAR she had paid. She misspelled it and it was sitting in limbo. I told her I did not ever get it and she was able to confirm that.
Thank you.
