Hi vakathy and tadentus, and welcome to the forums!

If the email address used is not one that is registered within PayPal, the payment will be unclaimed, and it will automatically revert back to you after 30 days.

If the email address is one that belongs to someone with a PayPal account, you can email that person and request a refund.

PayPal can't cancel a payment once sent without the approval of the recipient (in case goods were exchanged, for instance). The way that the recipient grants approval is by logging in and refunding,

I hope this helps!

Spoiler

This is upsetting as this is money that was being sent to my daughter to help her out in a predicament.   I sent it to the wrong email address...was one letter off.    Is there anyway we can expedite the 30 day waiting period?    Funds are needed urgently and we sent them to a complete stranger who hasn't appeared to claim it yet.

Hi tadentus,

I'm sorry to hear about your predicament. It's really frustrating when a stray keystroke can cause this kind of hold-up. I've done it before, myself.

If the payment is listed as unclaimed, there may also be a cancel option visible in your history next to the payment. This will be there only if the circumstances are such that the payment can be canceled. If the option is not there for you, it means that one or more factors exist that require permission to be granted from the recipient in order to refund, and that's something that a Customer Solutions representative would be bound by as well.

Take a look for a cancel option. Let us know what you find.

I hope this helps!

I have this issue as well and finding a resolution has been maddening. What a poor way to handle this issue PayPal. I made an order to a reputable vendor and then canceled it. The payment to them is still pending after two weeks, so my money is highjacked -- 30 days is unacceptable.

I talked to the vendor to refund and they cannot do anything on their end either.

This is frustrating as ever. I will no longer use PayPal to buy things online because of this issue. Our money should not be held in 'virtual space' for 30 days. There should be at most a 14 day turnaround.

Awful!
