"This email address is already linked to a PayPal account." error message

I have been sent money via someone, most of the time everything goes through all fine and dandy.. but this time when I tried to claim the money via email it tells me to log in, which I do and get this message "This email address is already linked to a PayPal account. Please log in to your PayPal account with your primary email address to confirm that you received the money"
The account isn't that old.. and i made the email specifically for this paypal, nothing else.. so I know I haven't used it for other things. I also check that's all comfirmed and that it's my primary and it's all fine and dandy, nothing wrong.
They person showed me proof of the payment and it DID say that the transaction would be delayed for 1 day.. I don't know if that's relevant or not..
I have asked the person to cancel the money and try it again to see if that works.. but if it doesn't any solutions?

Hi IDI,
This doesn’t sound right to be honest. Please make sure you have actually received the payment first by login in to your PayPal account. I recommend you to go to your transaction history and see the payment there. If there is no payment received and you only received the email then something is wrong.
I suggest you to change your password and security questions immediately. This can be scam in order to gain access to your PayPal account.
Here’s how to change your password or security questions:
- Go to www.paypal.com/uk and log in to your account.
- Click Profile near the top of the page.
- In the ‘Password' section, click Change.
- Choose the account information you want to change and click Edit.
- Enter your new password or security questions and answers, and click Save.
Note: Never give your password to anyone and only log in to your account at www.paypal.com/uk
Below are some tips to create a strong password:
- Try not to use a word you can find in the dictionary. Instead, try a combination of letters and numbers
- Use different passwords for different websites
- Include both upper and lower case letters and use at least one number or special character (!, *, _, etc.)
- Change your password often. We recommend every month.
Fake emails, also known as 'Phishing' or 'Spoof' emails; attempt to trick you into revealing personal or financial information such as bank account details, credit card details and passwords etc. These fake emails often link to fake (spoof) websites where your information can be collected if you type it.
You’ll know that an email is not from PayPal when:
- The email uses a generic greeting like ‘Dear user’ or ‘Hello, PayPal member.’ We'll always address you by your first and last name or the business name on your PayPal account
- The email requests financial and other personal information. A real email from us will never ask for your bank account number, debit or credit card number etc. Also we'll never ask for your full name, your account password, or the answers to your PayPal security questions in an email
- The email asks you to provide the tracking number of a dispatched item, before you've received the payment into your PayPal account
- The email includes a software update to install on your computer
Here are some security tips to help you stay protected online:
- Even if a URL contains the word 'PayPal', it may not be a PayPal webpage
- When using PayPal, always ensure that the URL address listed at the top of the browser displays as https://www.paypal.com. The 's' in ‘https’ means the website is secure
- Look for the 'lock' symbol that appears in the address bar. This symbol indicates that the site you are visiting is secure
If you think you’ve received a phishing email, forward it to spoof@paypal.co.uk and then delete the fake email from your mailbox.
Note:
- If you provided any personal information in response to a phishing email or on a spoof website, change your PayPal password and security questions immediately.
- If you provided any financial information, contact your bank and your credit card issuer and tell them about the situation.
- Review your PayPal account history to check that you recognise all recent payments.
