trying to claim unauthorised payment when it isn’t

How does PayPal investigate someone who (in this case) is lying and saying a payment is unauthorised when it wasn’t. They paid for me and I have a email saying they will pay. I’m not sure if they paid via friends and family or for an invoice as this has never happened before. I don’t know if they were charged any extra fees or I would have been as I only got the payment a few days ago. The email I got just said you’ve received money and “he’s name” send the sum of £xxx. Note from “he’s name” payment to handyman services and then the transaction id. Surely PayPal will be able to prove this transaction was carried out by him through he’s login process, cookies, ip address, phone location, Log in attempts or something and be able to prove it was him?

Click on the transaction and see if you paid a fee, if you did it was a goods/services payment and if not it was a friends/family payment.

Then come back and tell us which it was.

Hello he must have selected friends or family or a fee hadn’t yet been taken out as it was onlu there a few days before this happened. I’m not a s business just someone getting reimbursement for having to repay another handyman. Ift was never a unauthorised payment he is just trying to get he’s money back. As I’ve since learnt with all of this a screen appears to him that has a choice friends and family or goods and services, so he made they decision on which one to chose not me, I knew nothing about all of this until I got the PayPal email. I have emails from him saying he will pay me and that the work was carried out but I can’t help if he chose the wrong selection but my understanding now is you can’t ask money back from friends and family all you can do is chose is unauthorised osymenf which is exactly what he’s done. I’m just really wondering how PayPal look into the cases. I’ve explained it’s actually him that’s committing fraud and not me. Thank you in advice.

He may have decided to select friends/family but its easy enough to check on receipt of payment and refund if you required goods/services instead. In future always best to send a money request rather than allowing the buyer to send the funds.

Someone would not be able to open a Paypal dispute for non-receipt of item or item not as described as they would have no Paypal buyer protection.

However they can still open a dispute for an unauthorised transaction OR do a chargeback (via their card issuer) and you may well lose as you would have no Paypal seller protection for a friends/family payment.

All you can do is wait whilst Paypal reviews the unauthorised claim and see if they find in your favour or not.

Itake not a buyer or seller situation though as he was reimbursing me money that he owed me and also I since understand that there is no buyer or seller protection so when he chose to make the payment in that way surely he was the one in error as he chose to pay via a method that wasn’t offering any protection? He has committed fraud in doing this. If I offer a refund now the case will just be closed as it will be seen in refunding the money and I’ll also never see it again!

Don't refund now, wait until paypal have reviewed his unauthorised claim, you may still win.

Thank you for your help. I’m not sure what he’s plan is as I’ll be suing him otherwise and getting the banks and police involved for fraud!

Happy to say I heard back from PayPal today and the claim was won in my favour. Just shows how terrible he has been throughout this. Thought I would give others an update as I’ve seen a lot of people have viewed this. Supply all your emails, texts and interactions relating to payment to PayPal!
