Has there been any update on PayPal authorising an automatic payment that you are unaware of?

I realise that other customers have been caught out with the 'automated payment' system. I had an insurance policy and paid the monthly premiums through my own bank. I did not renew the policy however there was an outstanding payment due of £7 which I paid using my PayPal account. 10 days later and the company has withdrawn £139 from my account through PayPal. I have been advised that the company is one of the merchants who automatically set up this automated payment system when making even just a one off payment. This wasn't a subscription and I certainly was not advised that this system was being adopted. How on earth can this be legal? I have raised a dispute but don't hold out much hope. I am being asked to provide screenshots proving that the merchant did not advise me when I made the original transaction. How on earth would I do that? I was under the impression it was just another straightforward transaction for £7. Surely PayPal as well as the merchant should be alerting customers on checkout? Many people have fallen for this and many more are totally unaware it can even happen. Has anyone experienced this and taken it further? I can't afford to lose this money
