unexpected payment from paypal

I unexpectedly got a $50 transfer from another Paypal user and which I had no reason to expect. I contacted the person (sender) and she said had never transferred me any funds from Paypal. This person is one of the most competent people I have ever met and if she says she never sent the transaction, then I am quite confident that she never did, period.

I contacted PP and they said that since the transaction originated from her account, she would have to be the one to contact PP and initiate an investigation. She's been hospitalized with a major illness and unable to to follow through on this yet but in the meantime, I have become concerned about PP security and the possibility that either spontaneous or unauthorized (i.e. hacked) transactions are occurring. If it happened to her, it could happen to me I've been reasoning.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what could have occurred here?

Tell her to change her password and security questions / do a virus scan on her computer and make sure she has not logged into paypal via a spoof email.
