someone attempted to hack my account

I woke up yesterday to two PayPal emails: one was that 2FA was turned off on my account, and the other was that my email address had been changed. I frantically followed the links and then calmed down, made sure they were genuine PayPal emails, and used a fresh browser window to log in without following the links in the email just in case.

Turned out both emails were legit.  I was able to get back into my account because the person who somehow hacked my account was dumb enough not to change my number; looks like they didn't even attempt to do so. Once I got back in, I quickly looked at all accounts and cards linked to PayPal and determined there were no fraudulent charges or missing money.  I then deleted this person's email address from my account, added mine back, validated my number, changed pw, etc.

The weird part is, no missing money or fraud. I'm grateful for that. I changed a ton of other passwords related to all my online banking and credit card accounts, none of which were the same as the original PP but still wanted to be careful.  Should I be concerned my info was breached?  I will put a freeze on my credit report as well, but will PayPal be able to tell me anything about the account activity during this time, if this person viewed certain info, etc.?

Hi @fju2112,

Thank you for your post and for being a member of the community forum!

I am so sorry to hear that you had unauthorized access to your account, but I am also so pleased that you knew all the steps to take and took them immediately. You were calm, cool, and collected, and you did everything you needed to do. The only other possible suggestion I can make is to run a virus scan, just in case there was a keylogger or other malicious password grabbing utility on your computer. It's a slim chance, but one worth following up on.

A fraudster would not be able to gain full financial numbers from your account. If you believe your information may have been breached in another way outside of PayPal, any steps you wish to take to protect your information can be considered, of course.

Once again, congratulations for handling the situation so well. It was a lucky break that there were no transactions right off the bat, but your quick thinking prevented any happening at a later date as a result of this fraud. Good work!
