So I just set up a simple Smart Subscription Plan I wanted to add to my google sites website. I can probably resolve this problem by doing my own coding instead of using the simple template but I don't think I'm the only one facing this problem: My button is set up. Everytime I click on it it opens the usual PayPal loading circle in another tab and closes before anything happens. Would be nice if some has a solution! Thanks~

I had the same issue today after trying to test a new subscription product. This is what worked for me. It is a setting in your Paypal account.
This answer helped me - https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/About-Business-Archive/Subscribe-button-not-working-built-using-...
For me, it was this -
PayPal Account Optional is turned on - this enables non PayPal Members to pay by Credit Card.
I had this option turned on so that one could checkout as a guest if they don't have paypal. However for subscriptions, they have to have a Paypal account. So I had to turn that option off, re-add the code to my site and it worked.
Hope this helps.

I have a slight variation to this issue. After I updated my PayPal settings for PayPal Account Optional (thank you @mistyqe for the tip!), the button worked on my phone but not on a laptop computer.

Figured it out, didn't realize that Google Sites restricted the ability to open PayPal link in the same page for security reasons: https://support.google.com/sites/thread/212561706/created-a-new-google-site-with-paypal-button-by-em...
