I ordered something from john lewis and paid by PayPal. I have since returned the item via royal mail which is what the company recommended. I updated the postage to signed for so I had proof of sending and the company receiving. however the company havent recieved it and royal mail are saying they can not do anything til it's been 14 days after postage when it was to be delivered within 48 hours. where does this leave me in terms of a full refund.

Well the company is not going to refund you if they have not had their item back so you need to claim off your signed for slip in 14 days.

ok but the item cost £70 and royal mail are saying they will only refund £50 and that's only after they have investigated which will take 30 days. isn't paying by PayPal meant to resolve all this hassle.

Paypal is not responsible for items lost in the post. They will get you a refund (if a seller refuses to do so), when you provide a tracking number that proves delivery of the item back to the seller (if it was a dispute for item received but not as described).
But you choose how you are going to send the item back and if you choose signed for and not special delivery then you can only claim what RM allow which is £50.
