Bank charges due to mistake

Hi, I've been using paypal for many years with absolutely no problems until mid march this year. I made the payment then was returned insufficient funds in account about a week after the purchase went through. I checked the bank details and everything was correct and tried adding my second card to my account to transfer funds from that instead. Paypal didn't recognise the addition of this card by the way until a month later when the payment finally righted itsself. Due to this my bank kept trying to transfer funds from an account that had no money in it for a month, instilling several charges for direct debit returns from my bank. I finally realised what the error was and transferred the money across to the account that I thought wasn't linked to my paypal but it turned out to be which sorted the issue and then unlocked my other card from being used. I have now accrued about 40 pounds worth of reversal charges from my bank due to paypal not recognising the card I added. What can I do to get this money back? My bank suggested I contact paypal but I've decided to come through these forums first.

Many thanks in advance.
