Received Email That I Had Been Refunded, But My Account Says $0.00 :(

Pretty straight forward, I got a email today saying how I just got a refund from the seller, but my account says $0.00. Should I just play the waiting game or call/email the people at paypal?

Thanks in advance :).

Hi LolYouReadThis, and welcome to the forums. I actually did LOL as I read your username, too. 🙂

I can definitely shed some light on this for you. It depends on the method you used for the original payment.

If you used a credit card, the refund went right back to the card, and that's why your balance would be 0.

If you used a bank, the funds would be credited back to your balance. However, if the payment was within the last handful of days, the funds haven't yet cleared from your bank for the initial payment. The seller has agreed not to take the funds once they do clear, but since they haven't cleared yet, they're not yet available for your use.

If you need further clarification, check out this FAQ I wrote. If you still have questions after that, let us know on this thread.

Hello Olivia, thank you for your help so far :). I payed partially through the remaining amount of money I had left on paypal, and the rest was taken off of my debit card.

Does it matter if you use a debit card or credit card? I guess I just have to play the waiting game Smiley Sad

Hi giancarlo2191, and welcome to the forums!

A debit card may potentially be run as a credit card or a debit card, depending on what type of card it is and which bank issued the card.

If it is run as a credit card, it behaves exactly like a credit card.

If it is run as a debit card, one of two things may happen. One, any refund might go directly back to the card. Two, any refund might go directly to the balance. This is dependent on the back-end debit card network used to process the transaction, and cannot be selected or changed. Either way, the refund should show immediately and would not need to be held to await clearing of funds the way a bank-funded payment would.

Hi LolYouReadThis, and welcome back!

If you paid it partially from the balance and partially from the card, the balance-funded portion would be on your account and would be available for use immediately. If the funds are not there, check your history to see if you made a subsequent payment and spent the refunded money. It's easy to forget to examine the final page of a transaction to see where the funding is coming from. I get click-happy all the time when I'm excited about buying something new! Well, I do that less now... when it comes to moving your own money around, it only takes one mis-click to sober you up and make you start to really pay attention to the settings before confirming! 🙂

I hope this helps you both!

Its been Days now since I got email about full refund both paypal and my seller. I used debit card for payment , my bank account is yet to be credited and my paypal account shows $0.00 balance. I am new to paypal, actually this is my first transaction and may as well be the last once I get this refund. I need to know how long you guys waited before your money was finally refunded.

Hi everyone!

If you go into your transaction history and find the original payment (you may have to set the date back to find it) and then click the little plus sign to the side of the transaction, it will expand and show you all associated actions, including refunds and the movement of those refunded funds. If there is no refund line associated, then the merchant did not refund you. If you received an email and there is no transaction that backs up the email, it may be a fake email.

If you see the line showing the refund, look at subsequent transactions and see if the funds have been spent since they arrived in your account.

If you're still having trouble, please call Customer Solutions so a representative can give you individual assistance while looking at your account. You can get the number by going to Contact Us (at the bottom of any PayPal page) and Call us. Log into your account and you will get the appropriate number for your region and a web pin number to speed you through validation.

I'm sure you'll be able to get to the bottom of it! I hope this helps!
