Funds from unknown sender

We are a nonprofit. We received $5.00 from an unknown sender. We receive donations online but they are always from someone that we have had previous contact. We are in Oklahoma. The sender is in NYC. Is there some kind of scam that this could be associated with?

I certainly hope that this is not a scam.  Do you have donation buttons on your website? Anybody could click on one of those to donate.  Maybe it's possible this person was referred to you by someone who has donated to you in the past?

Most scams involve fake PayPal emails or people trying to get you to send money to them.  Unless this person is asking you to do something else (like send them something or provide you with any sensitive information), I'm inclined to think that the donation is authentic. 🙂
