Accepting Credit cards for payment- how secure is it?

I have an order that I recently issued an invoice for, to allow a customer who did not have a verified paypal account pay via credit card. As long as they are using a credit card to pay, is this still secure? I'm afraid of getting burned and want to protect myself as much as possible when taking payments for animals that I sell.
