Trying to pay a QR code for first time, android app stuck on "let's set your in-person & qr code preferences" - keeps coming to a "we're sorry it seems like something went wrong" how can I get past this nonsense?

Welcome to the Community!
I'm sorry you're having trouble with the QR code. I recommend uninstalling and then reinstalling your PayPal app. If you still receive an error, you can reach Customer Support by clicking 'Contact' at the bottom of any PayPal website. Support is also available through Facebook Private Message or Twitter Direct Message.

Doesnt work - cleared cache, cleared data, reset phone, uninstalled and reinstalled... nothing made any difference. Contacted support, they had no idea.. refered me to merchant technical support. Lodged ticket, no reply. Contacted the merchant and paid outside of paypal.. just wont ever try to use this feature again.
