Best to link a card and a bank account. The card is to confirm your billing/mailing address and the bank account is to have a verified PayPal account status.

You also don't need to add money to your PayPal balance to pay, just select your linked card or bank account to pay at checkout.

If you have both card and bank account linked and choose to pay with bank account, PayPal does an "Instant Transfer" payment to the recipient immediately and await your bank payment to clear and charge your card if your bank account is insufficient after up to 2 or 3 attempts total have been made to present payment at your bank so best to add money to your bank account (instead of to the PayPal account which will be in the negative at that point) to avoid additional bank overdraft fees from the numerous attempts.

You can select your choice of payment method at checkout or set a preferred payment method on the Wallet page to always pay with that as default (which also can be changed during checkout).

Remember that billing agreements and automatic payment's funding sources can be canceled/edited in the way below and are separate from the wallet preferred payment method settings:

Go to Settings (gear icon) > Payments > Manage Automatic Payments

Select merchant on left, click Cancel/Edit (Pencil Icon) on the right.

If you receive money, you may need to upgrade your paypal balance to a PayPal cash or cash plus account to use the PayPal balance features as per:

Policy updates and user agreement changes to Personal PayPal accounts

What can I do with my personal PayPal account, PayPal Cash account or PayPal Cash Plus account?

Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂
