I haven’t changed any of my settings but I set up a direct debit with Apple for iCloud storage. For some reason PayPal has taken the money from my PayPal credit which hasn’t happened before. I want to stop this from happening in the future, not entirely sure how this happened.

In general, if you don't have a specific funding source set up, the payment could come from PayPal Credit. Here, you can find information on how to manage your automatic payment.
