PayPal purchase protection is useless!!

I made a purchase for an IPhone. Because I’ve been scammed in the past, I paid thru my PayPal to ensure I’d be protected! As soon as I made the payment, the seller stopped responding to my messages and completely blocked me from any communication. I never received the product and I’m out 150 plus 15 for “expedited shipping”!! I contacted FB and was told I had no claim because I went thru messenger. I was sent a link from the seller for payment and I paid. Facebook and Messenger I thought we’re one in the same. Guess not when it comes to trying to file a claim. Then I contacted PayPal. Knowing I had purchase protection, this should be no problem! WRONG!! I was told since it was a third party purchase, I’m not covered!! What a crock of **bleep**! Everything is third party! PayPal doesn’t sell merchandise directly. I read all the legal bs and there is no reason I should be denied my refund!! Please help. The buyer basically stole my money. Am I supposed to just go file a police report? I just don’t know what to do or who to contact at this point.
