"Monthly Account Statements" being sent even though option disabled

I've had this account for years and have always had this disabled. I verified again today that it is still selected "NO."

My Profile-->My Money-->Monthly Account Updates-->No

I called and a rep told me that starting in 2012 we will be required to receive those statements due to a law of some sort.
I'm highly skeptical of that claim. The money market account is gone. I have 2 IRA's and I don't get statements for those. I'd say they are a tad bit more important than my Paypal account.
To me, any communication I receive from Paypal that I can't opt out of is spam. The only way I can see to stop receiving these emails will be to stop using Paypal. Is that really what they are going for?

I've searched around a bit, but I can't find an answer. Other than canceling my paypal account, how do I stop the monthly statement e-mails? I don't see such a setting in the account settings.  Since my purchases are so infrequent, I like receiving e-mails when the account is used and not a monthly statement. Banks allow me to stop monthly statements, why doesn't PayPal?

I too have looked on how to turn off this SPAM notification (and it is unsolicated email that is not necessary for dormant accounts).

It is not listed anywhere on the communicates tab below.

Account Information Notifications Email

Name Change, Address Change, Email Change, Password Change, Lost Password Request, Bank Account Change

Paypal should know better than to send unexpected email as it will bread a false sense of security for phishing scams.

Only option I see now it to block all email from paypal or and not get any notifications.

If someone can share how to shut this off this spam, please do.

Thank you

PayPal, please, allow us to choose whether or not we want to be bothered with monthly emails. I rarely use my account and I don't need more email overflowing my inbox.

I could not agree more with the posters on this topic. I would like the monthly statement emails to stop. I use paypal too infrequently to require this communication. Additionally, it looks like spam and this causes more problems..

Sorry, I don't know what the etiquette is here on resurrecting old threads. I didn't see that old thread. Good to know I'm not the only one.

I spent 36 minutes on the phone with a rep who spent at least 15 minutes on hold himself trying to get this stopped for me. He informed me that it's just not possible and claims that it's because of some law or another. But like I said, I have multiple bank accounts, credit cards, IRA's, etc, and none of those send me statements every month. (Rather, they do, but I've opted out of all of them.)

He confirmed that the only way to stop this is to cancel your account. About the only "victory" I can look forward to is him escalating the ticket so that we can get the settings removed from the website, since that setting is useless, confusing, and potentially frustrating.

The thing is, I have hundres of logins and usernames on various internet sites. If every one of those sent me a monthly statement (because, you know, they are so important) I'd be overwhelmed, even if all* I had to do was delete them every month. Times two hundred. Nothing against Paypal, but you are one of many sites I have given my email address to. Yes, it's true, you have a lot more information about me than most. Nonetheless, stop bugging me.

Currently the FTC requires businesses to provide an opt-out or unsubscribe option in emails. Essentially anything that doesn't is considered spam:

http://business.ftc.gov/documents/bus61-can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business

Furthermore, I have real-time notification turned on for payments sent and received--so why would I need a monthly (not even vaguely real-time) statement on top of that?

Anybody who is curious, Paypal tells you that you can disable these emails here:

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/customerprofileweb?cmd=_profile-monthly-statements

* A) The fact that it seems innocuous does not make it any less annoying...or any less spam

B) I can create a filter to send them all to the trash, but that makes me nervous that I'll miss real emails that I've requested

C) Increased mailings enhances the risk of phishing scams working. Up until today I knew that anything else I received from Paypal was phishing, since I don't receive random stuff from Paypal like this.

"This feature is only available to Business and Premier Accounts."

Awesome.. still no way of stopping the spam and I have no reason to upgrade.

So statements are global, but disabling (even though the 'disable" is broken) them is not?

Where is my opt-out, Paypal?
