i don't know how to transfer money from my debit card to my paypal account. is this a possibility? if not, then why was it an option to connect my card to my paypal in the first place?

Linking a card to your PayPal account helps verify the account.

It's not possible to add funds into a PayPal account balance with a credit or debit card. Your linked card is selected from your available funding source list when sending funds.

You can add funds into your PayPal account with a linked bank or PayPal Cash.
