Paypal wants my phone to send me Paypal news? Thanks, but no thanks.

Today when I logged into my account, Paypal wanted me to give cellphone number, "to protect my account", or course.

Reading fine print showed that Paypal is going to use this phone number to send me Paypal news, among other things.

In other words, give us your phone number so we can spam you on the phone, and that will give you more protection.

No, I'm not going to.

It's not mandatory plus you do have a choice.  Note, if you go thru the Privacy Policy, they already have enough information about you.  (really no need for any more)
