Unknown phone number can't be removed from account

From research on the forums this issue has cropped up multiple times over the years. I received a text alert late last night thanking me for updating my mobile. Spoiler alert, I hadn't. On discovering this today, I cannot remove said number. I have added a second number (my partner's), still can't remove it (doesn't display an option where it should). I did not add this number, I cannot remove it, nor can I set my own as a primary mobile any longer. There is no contact email for PayPal support, there are no resolutions on any other thread related to this topic and I can't see anyone has received any meaningful help via any other contact or calling by phone.
Any help that could be offered before I look to close the account premanently and set up a new one would be greatly appreciated.

Contact options for Paypal are accessed by clicking help/contact bottom left of Paypal pages.
1. Paypal phones when available (you can use the guest option if you can't log in).
2. Live chat is also randomly available.
3. You can send them a message, during business hours you may also be able to message whilst logged out.

4. Have you considered contacting Customer Service via Facebook or Twitter?
You can send them a personal message from their Facebook or Twitter pages.
