How do I change the name of an active subscription?

The non-profit I work for had a "name that animal" contest in order to raise money for a large group of rescued animals.  It was successful and we received 12 month sponsorships (subscriptions) for each of the animals.  When the campaign started, the animal was identified by a number.  But now they all have names.  I want to change the notifications we receive of these donation to show the name of the animal and delete the number id as the number id is not longer important.  Can anyone help me?  When I emailed Paypal, their answer did not correlate with my question.

I'm not sure you can do that without cancelling the subscriptions.

I'd just make a handwritten list, correlating the names to the numbers and paste it on the wall by the computer.
