Does a Buy Now button combine with what's in cart?

If a customer loaded a cart with items, and then there's an item that only has a "buy now" button and the customer presses that, what will happen?

buy now buttons are self-contained, they'll be asked to checkout. they can also edit the quantity if allowed for only that item before checking out and buying now. it has no cart functions.
