I have sold an item two fishing reels to be exact but buyer claims there are not working now but he has taken them to bits and tried to fix but what if he has done this and has broken them what protection do I have

If he files a claim and paypal agree with him then he would have to send the item back to you before getting a refund.
All you can do is give paypal as many facts as you can during the dispute phase in case the buyer escalates to a claim.
The fact he took them apart does not detract from the fact that they didn't work anyway on receipt surely !!
