the buyer has stated the item now does not suit and requires a refund, this is fine if they return
However at present i do not have the funds in my bank account, what will happen? will my account just go overdrawn to fund this?

You have to have cleared funds in your paypal balance OR bank account to be able to issue a refund.
So if you don't issue one then the buyer will probably open a paypal dispute to get a refund.
Advice is voluntary.
Kudos / Solution appreciated.
