English "hey" is less formal than saying "hi," similar to the way saying "hi" is a shortened/less formal greeting than saying, "hello." Generally all of these greetings are acceptable. (Hopefully this is what you meant. I felt sorry for this post seeing no replies and nearly 50 views lol)
