Paypal requesting ID

Anyone else suddenly had their account “limited” pending providing Paypal with proof of identity and a scan of your passport? This just happened out of the blue with no contact from Paypal prior to trying to make a purchase and ignoring requests for more information! Personally I’m not happy to provide, online, information that can easily be used to steal my identity. If this is how it has to be then Paypal need to realise people will leave in droves plus what effect will this have on your eBay account?

Happened today to me too, out of nowhere. I tried to send a payment to a supplier and immediately they bounced it back, then sent me an email saying they were worried someone else had tried to use my account. Okay, but it gives me no option to verify that it was me and process it through? Next thing I know my account access is restricted. They’ve asked for ID, utility, proof of invoice, proof of shipping, proof of supplier. The list goes on.. PayPal aren’t the bank. And when I opened my bank account I didn’t have to provide any of this long list of drivel. I’m not providing a photo of my face, name and other sensitive information through an anonymous portal on the internet?! I’ve contacted them via email, and now I’ve sent them a message via the Facebook app. They can’t operate as a “bank” or credit card in the UK, without abiding by the law here. So I won’t be providing it, but I’ll be getting my account access back.
