Hello.
I currently have a buyer claiming non-delivery of a parcel I posted (on 1st Dec) using the paypal online posting service. I paid for 1st class Recorded Delivery, printed off the label, took the parcel to the post office the next day and got a certificate of posting. However, I now need to respond to the buyer with a tracking number (to check for a proof of signature), which I can't seem to find a record of anywhere. I have checked the paypal online posting transaction details (the status says 'posted') but the tracking number is nowhere to be found. Is there any way I can find this number?
Please help!

Hi guys,
If you are purchasing postage through your PayPal account, you may have the item picked up or you may bring the item directly to your local post office. When the item is picked up or when you are dropping off, you are supposed to be given a tracking number for the parcel by the driver or the person at the post office.
Our system isn't given tracking numbers by Royal Mail i'm afraid . You need to ensure that you get the tracking number when you are posting the item in order to ensure that you are able to trace the item.
If you have posted the item and you haven't been given a tracking number, the best thing to do is to try and contact your local post office in order to see if they can supply you with one.
I hope this information helps,
David.

That's utterly useless. The whole point of being able to buy, generate and print postage on Paypal is for convenience. It is not always necessary to visit the post office to post an item. In this scenario, you wouldn't get a tracking number even if you have paid for Recorded Delivery.
That's ludicrous. Paypal or the Royal Mail are only providing half a service in this case.
I too was checking to see if I could track if the person has received the item since I paid extra for Recorded Delivery but since I posted it in a post-box then this option isn't available.
You don't design a system like this to remove the tracking aspect. It needs fixed.

I agree a bar code and other security features are generated to protect both PayPal and the Royal Mail from fraudulent use of postage labels, but without a tracking number, given PayPal's own policy requiring a tracking number to protect sellers from claims of non receipt the service is useless.
I've used PayPal and eBay since around 2001 and used the service for the first time over Christmas as the post office was closed and I knew the exact weight of the item I was sending.
But according to PayPal I won't get paid until a) the item is delivered - well I can't prove if it has or hasn't as I have no way of tracking it! or b) the buyer leaves feedback - and that isn't guaranteed. Given this and the fact I've wasted an hour looking through the transaction details and searching the help centre to find out PayPal don't provide a tracking number I won't be using the service again and will be tweeting as such!
Big fail PayPal, very poor, not amused.

I noticed the pitfalls of using the online postage from paypal but liked the convenience.
This is how I get around it.
Next time you go into the post office with a parcel ask them for some spare stick on "Signed for "lables, these have separate tracking numbers on them.
I got a couple of dozen and keep topping them up every now and again, said it was to save time in post office, dont tell them you are going to post them in letterbox as they dont get any commission when you do this and will not be keen to give you them.
Now when I print the postage lable on I stick a Signed for lable next to it complete with tracking number , note the number on the lable or do as I do and photograph it with my ifone.
It is tracked for the whole journey except for the proof of posting at the post office but I have never had a problem as the main queries are at the delivery end and that is tracked.
Hope this is of help.
