How do i return a held payment??

I've just sold some things on ebay for the first time and one of the buyers has returned one of the items because he wasn't happy with it and i am now trying to return his money. His payment shows on my paypal account but it's on hold and the money hasn't actually gone into my account. I can't refund him the money until i've actually received it but not sure how to do this. Can anyone help??

Thanks Smiley Happy

Was it an e-check? If so there's nothing you can do except wait for it to clear (for reference, in the future, don't send an item until payments have cleared and you actually have the money in your account; e-checks can bounce or be cancelled by the buyer just like real cheques). Or you can advise your buyer that he alternatively has the option of calling his bank and asking them to put a Stop Payment on it, which would be faster but might cost him a fee that he would have to cover himself.

Well the payment had cleared my account but then he filed a dispute on ebay and the payment was then put on hold. I think he probably has to close the case on ebay for the payment to be released so i can then return it. It's so hard to get any info from ebay or paypal! Thanks anyway.

Hi Kdennis7,

If your funds have been placed on a temporary hold in relation to an eBay dispute and you wish to refund you can offer a refund through the dispute. This will then release the hold from the funds and give them back to your buyer. You can also contact eBay directly and advise them that you wish to refund the payment and close the dispute.

To contact eBay please sign in to your eBay account at www.ebay.co.uk  and click ‘Contact Us’, in the top right corner of the eBay page.

I hope this helps.

Paula
