Update. I was able to re-open my case. It cost $50 to send the hammock back to China, but paypal is refunding me $30 of the $50. This means that if all goes well and I get a refund, I will have lost $20 instead of $70.
Fedex contacted me and said that they need the phone number for Fuhai. Of course, Fuhai will not give it to me. So I asked paypal to get the phone number from them. I get a response from paypal that clearly denotes they do not even read the messages we send them before responding. In this case, I said:
This is regarding dispute Case ID: PP-D-xxx FEDEX is requesting the phone number for the seller. Can you please request it from them and send it to me? Thank you.
Paypal responds 19 hours later:
Checking your case PP-D-xxx I see that you are eligible for a refund once the item is returned to the seller. Return instructions had been posted in the Resolution Center and email reminders had been sent to ensure the return of the item. Once the seller receives the item back, we will process the refund back to your credit card which usually takes 3 - 5 business days to post. Regarding to the phone number of the merchant, they have not provided any phone number here.
This response just denotes that Paypay doesn't read the messages before responding. I know they did not provide the phone number. I am asking Paypal to please get it from them.
What is sad is how Paypal enables such fraudulent merchants to stay in business. One of the reasons I bought this thing is because it was thru Paypal. Now I know that a Paypal transaction does not protect consumers.
