Adding coupons to your order after return from PayPal, not confirming order yet it's processed??

I had a company send me a discount coupon to use on a new order.  I was directed to Paypal to input my information and then directed back to the website to add the coupon code and finalize my order.  All was well until I added the coupon code and it was rejected, saying it was not valid.  I did not click on the confirm my order because of the coupon being rejected and emptied my cart and closed the website.  In a matter of moments, I received a message thanking me for my order.  I immediately wrote to the company and to Paypal to start a dispute.  I received a refund from the company but Paypal denied my case saying that the order was authorized.  My question is how do you cancel an order in a case like this?  If Paypal automatically approves the payment without my confirmation at the website, what recourse do you have?
