Question about VISA as Back Up Funding Source

I just paid, earlier today, for a Buy it Now item on ebay. I had a few dollars in my paypal account, which were used to pay for part of the amount, and the rest, it looks like, will be taken from my chequing account, which is my main funding source.
Funding Type: | PayPal Funds and Instant Transfer

There is not, however, sufficient money in the chequing account to cover the amount needed. My assumption was that, not being able to get the funds from the bank, paypal will then attempt to get them from my VISA card. Is that correct? WIll my bank simply refuse the request if the funds aren't there, and then paypal will go to VISA as the backup source?
Thanks for your comments!
