This is **bleep**   I have a  back up  card  to use  when my  bank account is too low,  and  I  was  charged  $70.00  for  not haveing the  money in my  bank account  when  the  back up card  was there to be  used  but Paypal  did not  use it.  Being that I  am  Disabled  and Had Heart surgery last  month, I  can not afford  to  throw  money away  because of  a  big  company   **bleep**ing people over.   Paypal  should  reimburst  me  for thier   **bleep** ups,  but I  can not get in touch  with them   . (  GO FIGURE )   But what is a  small person to a  big  company ?  NOTHING....   So as soon as my  items  are taking care of,    **bleep** PayPal,  it will be  canceled,,,,,,,,,    Yours  Truly, Mike Metts   1hotroadrunner

Hi Coral, slee487, and 1hotroadrunner,

Welcome to the forums!

I understand the frustration that happens when you find that the funding source for a transaction is not what you thought it would be. Paying through PayPal is pretty simple, so when that final page comes up before you confirm your payment, a lot of people click to complete the payment without reviewing the details. It's really important to do that, though, because that's where you make sure the funding source is the one you want and all the other information is correct. Once the payment is completed, it's not possible to go back and edit any of it.

When the bank is the primary funding source, PayPal makes every effort to use that primary funding source before resorting to the backup funding method. If the first attempt fails, a second attempt is made to use that method, and that is a process that can't be halted.

Completing a payment where the bank is your funding method is like writing a check or using your bank debit card. The purpose of backup funding is to have a failsafe so that the payment will not have to be reversed or bring your account negative. It's kind of like at your bank, if you have a credit account designated to cover overdrafts from your checking account in case you miscalculate and spend more than you have. Banks charge for that, but PayPal doesn't. PayPal never charges any fees for spending more than you have in your balance.

I know this doesn't get you back your overdraft fees, but I hope it helps clarify the process. As far as overdraft fees go, sometimes a bank will be willing to waive some or all of the overdraft fees as a one-time courtesy if you let them know you misunderstood the process and didn't realize they'd be charged. It can't hurt to call and ask.

And it clearly stated that Paypal  will use your bank account first  and if there is not enough money in the account,  It would use the  back up  card.

1hotroadrunner - That's correct. The backup funding source will be used,  if the primary funding source fails on the second attempt.

Why not go directly to backup funding after first attempt fails with bank acct?  Or, better yet, why not allow a credit card to be the primary funding source instead of the back acct?
