Updating Card Details / Preapproved Payments

My card expires next month and I need to enter my new one.

Does this cancel my pre-approved payments/subscriptions (I seem to remember it did last time)?

Hi there Midlandsfirst,

If you have a card registered on your account that is due to expire soon, you can temporarily change the funding option of your subscription payments so that the subscriptions are not cancelled when your card expires on your account.

You need to add an alternate payment method to your PayPal account before you change or remove your subscription's funding source.

First you need to change your current payment method:

  1. Go to www.paypal.co.ukand log in to your account.
  2. Click 'Profile' near the top of the page.
  3. Select 'My money'.
  4. In the 'My pre-approved payments' section, click 'Update'.
  5. Select the merchant whose agreement you want to change under 'Merchants'.
  6. Click 'Change' under 'Funding Source'.
  7. Select an alternate payment method and click 'Save'.

When you receive your new card from your bank/credit card company, you can then register this on your account and change the subscription funding source over to your new card. This would then prevent any of the subscriptions failing on your account.

I hope this helps,

David.

I've received a new credit card from my bank and registered it on Paypal as my default card, but I cannot work out how to change the funding source on an existing monthly subscription. The subscription is set up for payment to be made from my old card which has now expired, but when I go to 'Pre-Approved Payments' for that subscription, it will not allow me to highlight the 'credit card' option which would presumably then allow me to select my new card. It was Paypal who emailed me to advise that the subscription payment has failed and that another attempt will be made in three days, but I don't seem to be able to change the funding source even when I follow the instructions in their email on how to do so.

There is no problem making Paypal payments using the new card as I've already successfully done so, but for some reason, I do not seem to be able to select it as a method of paying existing subscriptions, and I do not want to have to cancel the subscription and set up a new one unless I have to, so I would be grateful for any ideas/instructions that help to provide a solution to this problem.

Hi AndyPandyMan,

Welcome to the Community Forum! Sorry to hear about the issue you're having.

If the card connected to your subscription is now expired, you'll need to cancel the subscription and initiate a new one with the seller using your new card, as the funding source needs to be updated before the old one is removed or expired.

Here’s how to cancel a subscription:

  1. Go to www.paypal.com/uk and log in to your account.
  2. Click ‘Profile’ near the top of the page.
  3. Select ‘My money'.
  4. In the ‘My pre-approved payments’ section, click ‘Update'.
  5. Select the merchant whose agreement you want to cancel and click ‘Cancel’.
  6. Click ‘Cancel Profile’ to confirm your request.

I hope this helps,

Sophie

Thanks for the quick reply Sophie,

The email which I received from Paypal this morning included instructions on how to change the funding source of the existing subscription. It did not mention anything about cancelling it and setting up a new one, so that is what I was attempting to do. Unfortunately your solution means that I would be charged a set-up fee for creating a new subscription which also incurs being tied in to a minimum 12 month term. Not good.

I think that I will reply to the email from Paypal to report the problem I'm having in successfully carrying out the instructions in their email.

Regards,

AndyPandyMan
