Welcome to the forums, kimm!
PayPal recently introduced the ability to do this using an iPhone. It's not available on other platforms yet, but it's really exciting to see the possibilities.
You can learn more about Mobile Check Capture here
I hope this helps!

I can't understand why these take 5 -6 days to be credited for the check deposit. This is an optical scan which comes under Check21. The money should be available within an hour of deposit.

Hi Gridlocked,
The check image is actually seen right away. However, the validation of the check and confirmation of the funds takes longer. If you click the link in the previous post, there's a FAQ that answers that question and others.

I've read that previously but it does not explain why this is not covered under Check21 in the US anyway.
Basically PayPal or whoever the bank is that's used is holding the deposit and making interest off it before releasing the funds. Check 21 items are cleared in an hour.
USAA has a service called EasyDeposit and the funds are credited immediately.
