Why is it impossible to contact Paypal to query anything?

I have received what looks like a genuine email from Paypal to say there may have been "unusual activity" on my account. It purports to come from servic at paypal dot com. However, when I try the link to find out more, I get a warning form my browser to say it leads to an "unsafe site" and suggests it could be fraudulent. Obviously, I would like to alert Paypal - for their good as well as mine. But the Paypal site gives only FAQs and stupid loops that go nowhere. Why isn't it possible to give the customer decent service and advice? God knows they take a big enough commission for their services!!

Its a spoof, DO NOT USE ANY LINK.
Firstly if the email addressed you as ''Dear Member'' / ''Customer'' / ''Client'' OR your ''email address'' then that confirms its a spoof as paypal would address you by your full name eg Dear John Smith.
Secondly if there was a link OR attachment in that email to ''cancel'' the transaction or ''confirm'' any details then again it would be a spoof.
If there was a problem with your account paypal would not ask you to click on an unsafe link in an email or by downloading an attachment, they would direct you to log in normally and go to the resolution or the message centre for more information.

going into the message centre there is nothing to tap to compose a message as it says there is in the help pages. after numerous attempts to contact them and many hours i have given up and am considering deleting paypal altogether. for something that says it is secure i have found it most defenitly is not as it has been allowing transactions without asking for a password
