Paypal setting up direct debit without my permission?

Just wondering if anyone else has encountered PayPal withdrawing money from their account without their prior permission?
I checked my direct debits a few months ago and discovered I had an outgoing of £50 going to PayPal every month!
I did not set up this direct debit so I cancelled it as soon as I saw it, but £50 had already been withdrawn.
I hadn't used PayPal to pay for anything around that time so it can't have been used for a purchase I'd authorised.
I've written to PayPal to ask why this happened but have still heard no response.
Now when I try to use PayPal am I told there are 'issues with my bank' and it will no longer work so I don't know what to.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Is it possible that inadvertantly you gave your sign in details away by clicking on a link in a spoof email, the amount sounds like a recurring payment.
You should have initiated an unauthorised payment dispute, this would have gotten you your money back.
Remove your bank account from PayPal and add it again, if you wish to make payments using it you will need to go through the verification process again.
