Today I received yet another scam email from intl.paypal.com
Starting off with
Hello lee tom (not even my name)
Sent to my hotmail account, which is not tied to paypal in any way
In the details section, it gives :
my hotmail account address
a confirmation code
and my address in CHINA
Pretty dumb as I live in the UK

I got the same email using the 'lee torn' name also sent to an email account I use for forums. The links don't seem phoney but didn't want to test them out.
The header info shows IP that yahoo agrees belongs to paypal. Not sure how that scam would work. 😕

I too have received an activation e-mail from PayPal addressed to "Lee Tom" in China, which is using my non-paypal e-mail address. I have also received a message with the subject "Your account has been limited" again from PayPal addressed to "Lee Tom". The account has not been activated as no links have been followed in either message.
No account has ever been registered by myself on this particular address but it appears that the account does indeed exist as I cannot create an account with the e-mail address being used.

I today received the Lee Tom email.
The links all look real, although I did not click on them - I even loaded up paypal and clicked forgotten password to this account. To which I received an email from paypal. (note that I went onto paypal from a different browser and not through the links in the Lee Tom email)
I shortly received an email saying - click here to reset. I did not click the links just incase, but it is interesting that so many people have received the same email.
I also do not understand how this is a viable scam?? I reported the issue with paypal, but still waiting for them to get back to me.
My actual paypal acount is linked with another email, so I do not understand what this Lee Tom is going to achieve, except stop me from creating a paypal with that account.....

The same thing has happened to me and 2 family members on my domain.
I contacted the PayPal spoof team by email who have come back with a quite frankly useless response.
All they said is that yes the email did originate from PayPal and go to my settings to disable notifications.
The fact it was from China using my email address did not seem to cause them concern even though I stressed this in my original email to them.
We've only had the click to activate account emails and no 'your account has been activated' which I guess is a good sign.
I've changed all the email passwords on my domain for security purposes.

PayPal will never ask you to enter your password in an email. it looked like this below:

Hi everyone,
I realise that this must be very concerning for all of you.
My best advice for you all would be to contact customer services directly. We would be able to see if someone has created a new PayPal account using your email address.
If we did find an account, we would then be able to prevent them from being able to use your details without your permission through the PayPal website.
Please let me know how you get on.
David.

I did as you said and contacted customer support directly.
They came back to me today to tell me the email was a scam with a virus attached; hmmm one problem, I have already been told that this email had come directly from PayPal AND it had no attachment.
I did mention all this in my request but they decided to ignore it.
All in all I'm not at all impressed with the spoof/phishing department OR the support people. If either are unable to read an email properly then what chance does anyone have?
I have gone back to them with this information again and asked them (again) to check if my email address has been used to set up an account. I have absolutely no confidence they will check or even understand this simple request.

Just received another email thru my hotmail account addressed to Lee Tom, telling me about updates to PayPal's security
I don't trust support sites for any firms as they dont know what they are talking about.
90% of support sites are not even located in the country you are calling from
And 99% of them dont speak your language
They read from scripts
I phoned one up the other day to ask if there was any line works going on in my area.
Due to an Internet loss on my entire street
We saw 2 of the ISP vans in the street further down from us. But decided to phone and check
After 10mins of push 1 for this, push 2 for that, I got thru
Below is a transcript of the conversation ( 1= me, 2= call centre rep)
2: Hello my name is xxxxxxx how can I help you
1: I'm just phoning to see if there is any line works in my postcode as the internet is down on my street
2: Can you connect to the internet?
1: No
2: Have you checked the connection to your Modem
1: There is no activity, the connection light is blank, the whole street is offline
2: Have you checked your Browser settings, can you connect to the home page?
1: NO, cannot connect to the internet at all
2: Would it be ok for me to access remote desktop to check your settings
1: Sure but with no internet you wont be able to connect.
2: please go to xxxxxxxxx and download the small program from there
1: Thats not possible, I CANNOT connect to the internet
2: Are you sure the modem is connected properly
1: The problem is not at my end..... All I am asking is... Are there any lineworks in my postcode?
2: Then I'm sorry I cannot help you, there must be a problem with the line.
5 mins later there was a knock on my door
The ISP bloke, telling me my internet should be back on.
They were just patching the junction box after some kids had set fire to it
