Is your debit card safe using paypal

Hello I was wondering if your debit card will be safe if you use the paypal button on many different websites ????

I have always thought it was.......... but at 1.50am this morning someone has used my pay pal to buy off gum tree an it's took the money directly from my bank now leaving me unable to pay the direct debts due out tomorrow. Just hope paypal can sort it out quick for me.... just what I don't need so close to xmas
