Hi,
I have a friend (quite elderly) who lives in Spain and appears that a fake Paypal account has been set up (though it is possible it is an old Paypal account she did not know she had which has been compromised) using her email and bank account details. It has been used to pay for fraudulent Airbnb payments and she is currently looking at a loss of 1000 Euro as her bank are saying it was authorised by her.
I have tried helping her to login into the account and whilst we get the email to log into her account without the password, the personal questions have been changed by the fraudsters, so we cannot get into the account.
We have taken what steps we can to prevent this happening again - checking her virus software is updated and PC scanned, changing her passwords, contacting her bank etc.
We need to try and get the account closed, but our concern is that even if she phones up, none of the security information will match as the fraudsters would have changed it all to their details. She is in a position now where it is difficult for her to prove she is the geniune person. Any ideas how we can get Paypal to look into this and maybe freeze the account unti they can investigate it? I have tried to lodge a complaint, but obviously all the options work as if it is related to my own account. I wanted to use my account so that Paypal knew I was a legitimate person.
Any help would be appreciated.
Chris.

Hi Chris,
Welcome to our Community!
If your friend has no active account or a new account was created using her details. I would suggest that she call our Customer Support reporting unauthorised use of her financials, as it could be some was using her card on our guest payment service or indeed create an account with her details.
Our Customer Support are trained to deal with these situations. She could also go to her bank and explain she does not have an active account with PayPal. They would take the necessary steps to resolve the issue.
Thanks
Martin
