PayPal Smartphone app (problems with linking my phone)

I just downloaded the Paypal app today on my smartphone.  I put all information correctly into it, and it offers to link your phone.  When I click "Link my phone" it just continues to run but nothing happens, it doesn't even go on to another screen.  I have tried this 5 or 6 times and nothing.  Also it gives you the option to skip this process, which I finally did but then it wants me to change my PIN?  What PIN?  I have my usual password but I don't ever recall utilzing any PIN.  Why is it asking this?  If I place info into this portion is it changing my actual Password?  This app is a bit confusing when it comes to setting things up.
