Scammed as friends and family apymebt

Hi everyone! I did a transaction outside of eBay with an eBay seller (I have all our eBay messages saved) and to save money on the shipping they sent me a bill for a bag I purchased, they must have sent this as "friends and family" Long story short, I got the bag, got it authenticated and it is fake, I sent the bag back and PayPal was to refund me tonight after closing my case! Then I get an email saying they won't refund me as this payment was sent as friends and family. I have been in contact with PayPal 7 times since the incident and I have yet to have had someone before tonight mention anything about friends and family, all I've been told is case will be closed in my favour once the bag is sent. I obviously was unaware I sent the money to the seller as friends and family and this scammer won't refund me! PayPal isn't being helpful but they did decide to appeal the decision and I also contacted my bank and filed a dispute against the charge. I feel like I have done all I can. Has anyone else dealt with this?! The transaction was done through my bank account, not credit card unfortunately!

What does OP stand for? I paid by bank account (I know, I dropped the ball on so many things with this 😭. I was excited to get the bag so I just sent the payment as quickly as I could). I paid 1530 Canadian dollars. What's this about BBB?? I would love more info. Man, I've been an eBay member since 2008 and this happens to me now!

You're welcome.  Hope the bank hooks you up with a refund as that is a lot of money.  Good luck! Smiley Happy

I think you are missing the point of what I'm trying to do with this post. I'm not here for your opinions, PayPal advised me to contact my bank and start an investigation against this charge (nothing about unauthorized charge was mentioned, if that's the lingo I used in my previous message, my bad, I was writing quickly and looking for an answer) I am looking for some hope, I'm asking if Anyone has ever been able to get their money back when sending money as "friends and family" even though they are not friends and family! So, my question again, has this ever happened to you or have you heard of anyone successfully getting their money back? I'm at a loss here and it isn't looking good!

Since the payment you sent was discovered to be Friends and Family payment, you are not covered under purchase protection therefore PayPal directs you to your bank to request a reversal.  Seems like the reps gave you general answers and did not look thoroughly into your case until it went through the review process by relevant dept which determined your payment ended up being a friends and family payment.

How did you make payment?  Was the bill the seller sent a PayPal Invoice or a Money Request?  While sending payment were you given the option to choose pay as Goods & Services or Friends & Family during checkout?

I think what happened is that the seller sent you a Friends and Family Money Request, instead of a Goods & Services Money Request.  Have to be careful to be careful with those.  You could have out-smarted the seller by just reading the money request for the amount and the info in the note for what you're paying for and turn right around and gone to Send & Request page, click "Pay for goods and services" where it says "Covered by PayPal Protection for buyers" to send your payment.

Next time, do not listen to the seller to go outside eBay or any other marketplace, it negates any buyer protection the marketplace may have for you and aids the seller in violating the marketplace rules by them not paying their fee to the marketplace. Trying to save may cost you in the end.  Hope you are able to get your money back.

Kudos & Solved are greatly appreciated. 🙂

I did not read it, unfortunately. They sent me a request and I accepted. I never knew about the whole friends and family thing until now. You are right, saving a few pennies cost me lots. I'm basically looking for some hope and seeing if this has happened to anyone else and if they were able to get their funds. Sign.

he wants to hear from those who have similar experience or know someone who does and what is the outcome ,not you or me who just rub more salt into the case!

They skipped Ebay as seller offered free shipping to Canada, then seller sent him a payment request under friend and family.

Seller must have gotten his Paypal email address via some correspondence as Ebay messaging will not allow buyer and seller giving away their Paypal or private email address, but there are ways to go around it.

Anyway,he paid with credit card, and credit card issuer does not care whether payment is made under goods and services or friends and family, thats Paypal talk,cc issuer also does not care if anything $750 or over requires signature confirmation, thats Paypal and Ebay talk.

He made the purchase,he has proof it is not authentic,he returned the item and he did not get a refund,if he did,it would show u p in his cc statement as a reversal to his original entry.

so seller will lose and smacked with a $20 chargeback fee.

If seller has transferred the original payment to his bank or spend it,Paypal will ding his account with a negative balance of the purchase plus $20 fee .

Thank you. That's exactly what I need. Some hope, not opinions (PayPal gave me plenty of opinions and most of them were not even correct or useful).
