I'm getting a log cabin built , it's taking 10 weeks and builder has asked for a deposit , it's 600 pounds and unthinking if I pay through PayPal it's covered , he's going to send an invoice for myself to pay , I'm just worried it's a fraud and he's only after my deposit with no intention of building the log cabin Will I be covered if I use PayPal Any suggestions or advice Just need pointed in right direction as I've never used this way before always face to face

I would not use PayPal for such a deposit. I would use a mailed check and make sure it was part of a signed written/printed agreement. The agreement must be such that it could withstand your legal challenge in case of non-completion.
PayPal processes funds but has no enforcement policy on the contract for a service. It's best to read and understand PayPal policies for buyer protection for partial payments and service.
