Paypal Credit Card Scam?

Been receiving calls from people claiming to be from Paypal Credit almost every day for a month. They have my phone number and name. I ignore cause it shows up as "unknown" on my phone and figure they are trying to sell me a credit card.

So today they call again and start leaving messages that are threatening and nasty and how I need to call them back. I call to tell them back to tell them to **bleep** off and to stop harrassing me. The person I talk to proceeds quicky tell me I opened a Paypal Credit card and charged $5,000 on it and have not made a payment since August of 2016. It's now April 2017. This type stuff has happened on my legit cards before, and it non-issue. They cancel the card and that's the end of that.

Long story short, the conversion is with a young guy and it the story all sounds totally legit. But red flags start going up when he can't tell me a single thing I purchased for that $5,000. I continue to ask "Well what did I purchase for $5K and when?" He starts saying "Im trying to pull it up, can't tell you, computer is slow, etc and mumble about I bought something on Facebook in March of 2016". Then he says  he will "freeze" the account (you did not do that when I have not paid in over year????") and we will do a fraud claim".

So he starts asking for my basic personal info (phone, address, etc) and I give it to him (you don't already have it and don't seem to know that I have a Paypal account? Strange). Then he asks me for my social security number (which I ignore and ask about the purchases). Red flags are going up, but it could be legit so I roll with it.

While he's droning on about filing the fraud claim and the process, I pull up my credit report on the computer (I have a credit report account). There's NOTHING on there about a Paypal Credit card or any card from any bank I don't honestly have. Not even a suspicious inquire. But I don't tell the kid on the phone about it. He then drones on about Paypal will mail me a letter to contest the charges and they will then decide to "accept or decline" the dispute.

The whole thing sounded so legit, but at the same time there's ZERO record of me having any Paypa Credit card, or anything and the kid could not tell me anything about the account. There's nothing on my credit report about the card which the Paypal website says is done though Community National Bank (dont quote me on that name). Something like that.

Nothing supious on my bank accounts, or credit report. It's all just strange.

Call the number....it seems so legit. But the vibe I got is they were just fishing for my personal information.

I tried to call with a fake name and see if I got the same respone and I didn't. They were like "We don't have any account for that name".

What do you think? Am I on some sucker list?

You're on a list and you are the sucker.  They hooked you in and let them know you are interested; now they know you are live bait and you information will be shared with other such scammers.

You have caller ID; use it intelligently--DO NOT ANSWER UNKNOWNS.  Get the number and do an internet search; this own is a known scam.

You should know whether you have a PayPal Credit account and you should know how to check it.  There would be no reaso to check credit report; besides, that is an outdated report.

They did not try to sell me anything. They tried to pretend my ID had been stolen so they could phish me for my personal info, which probably would have resulted in my ID being hijacked.

Yeah, the red flag went up when he asked for my full social security number. The reason I thought it was legit is because it's not uncommon for people to get my credit card info and start charging crazy stuff, the bank calls, etc.. It happens once every couple years.

Anyways. They did not get any info that's not public.

I looked up the phone number. Looks like they try to get your information so they can send you fake bills to pay. LOL....they almost got me!!

Best solution:  do not answer; they are really slick in once they know a sucker answered.

Yea, they have been calling me almost every day for like a month. I just ignored it till today when they left a nasty sounding message. The dude was pretty slick. It was not like some Nigerian guy or Pakastani guy saying his name was "Chad" or some nonsense like that. It was a young American sounding kid.

I'm usually pretty good at detecting these things. They got me this time.

If you have VOIP phone service which permits duplicate rings (Vonage does), you can set it so scam calls get intercepted and you only get one ring.  Probably 90% of our calls are diveted to dead answers.
