How long does a fee stay pending without being verified before it disappears?

I recently attempted to purchase airline tickets through United, and when I chose PayPal as my payment method, I got all the way to my PayPal account, but when it returned to United it said I had a problem. So I did it again, and again I got another error when returning to United. My airline tickets were still not completed. When I logged back on to PayPal I saw that I have 2 pending transactions for the same amount - the amount of the tickets. I called United who claimed they couldn't tell if I paid or not and said I had to pay with my credit card to complete the purchase. So I did, and I received the confirmation from United. I'm guessing that PayPal will not receive anything final from United now, but will those 2 pending charges go away?

I read a Q&A on how to cancel a pending payment, but there is no CANCEL button below the transactions. Will these pendings disappear on their own after so many days?

Why not phone PayPal cusotmer service and ask for help.

In the meantime, just wait.

In future only use a credit card for airline purchases.

A temp hold can only last 72 hours without having the batch closed before it automatically gets canceled and reverted back to the funding source.  Keep in mind that the actual money itself can take an additional up to 24 hours to appear back int he account where it came from depending on which bank you bank with and how fast they process payments on there end.  It is strange though it never handed off the payments and completed the sale through the payment gateway.  I have seen weird glitches like this occur when the phone number on the online account did not match the phone number listed on your PayPal account but I am still shocked it put both payments in limbo without rejecting the order.
