Personal payments from web button

We run a website that allows couples to create a wedding website. Some couples want a button on their site to allow their friends/relatives to make a personal payment towards a wedding present. However, we are running into problems as a button on their site always seems to charge a fee, regardless of the type. This is frustrating, as if their guests just log into their Paypal account, they can send a free "personal payment", as long as they don't fund their account with a credit card. It's just a bit clunky, and we'd prefer to make it nice and easy for them by setting up the payment with a nice simple Paypal button.

I contacted Paypal support today who said:

I have reviewed your account and email and believe the issue lies in the type of button you are create for your customer’s websites.

I would suggest attempting to create a donate button which will not charge a fee. These still have all functionality of a 'Buy Now' button.

Our members are often on the phone to Paypal too, and they get told it's a problem with the way our website is set up, which then leads to angry emails/phone calls to our support team, asking for us to refund their Paypal fees...

Please can someone help resolve this once and forever! Is there a way of creating a button on a website that sets up a personal payment? It has to be possible surely?

Thanks very much in advance.

I can't provide an answer (sorry!) but I'd like to bump this question because I've been wondering exactly the same thing.

I've written a wedding website and want to provide the facility for friends and family to pay their wedding gifts to us via paypal.

I've found the options to create "donate" buttons, but I thought that donations were charged the same fees as other paypal payments, as opposed to personal payments, which is exactly what these payments would be.

Can anyone help to answer the question regarding a web button for personal payments (or advise whether donations charge fees?)

Thanks
