I've made purchases in the past on ebay and other sites where I was able to pay with paypal and no linked card, just my verified bank account and it was never an issue. Now today for some reason it's been asking me to add a credit card for a purchase, what gives? I can't add my debit card because it simply refuses to let me do so. I try to add my info and it rejects it.
Nothing seems to be an obvious problem; it seems to be a real bank and not a virtual bank. I don't think there's an issue with credit unions, so you'll probably have to call PayPal customer service. Since you're in the U.S., it's a great option as you can get a one-time passcode for better service when you call. Find the nubmer from "contact" link at bottom of page.
