Payment for goods but paid for using sending money to family & friends

Hi.  My husband was looking for a bow light for a project boat and found one on ebay.  He had questions for the seller and seller gave him his phone # so they could discuss.  The seller said he had a light he was looking for and could sell it to him out of ebay, and against my strongest wishes, he agreed to send the seller $537.00.  The seller sent us an invoice through paypal and we paid it.  Later that day he called us back and said paypal wanted to hold the money and he wanted it now.  So he sent a request through friends and family and we paid it again.  Now, three months later and no light (are you surprised!) I just tried to open a dispute but paypal said it won't because there was no exchange for goods.  There is an invoice in paypal for the light.  Is there anyway paypal can help?

Thanks, distraught wife!

There is no buyer protection for sending money as "Friends and Family".

You have 180 days to open a dispute - if you're past that, there's not much that can done.
